The Red, the Black, and the Green!

For some reason Afrika Bambaataa has been on my mind for about a week.

Every since they popped into my head I have been being reminded of them about 3 times.
Twice while at a tribute to Women in Hip Hop at Alvin Ailey and once someone was bumping Planet Rock in their car.

I figured it was a sign they should be this weeks Way Back Wednesday focus...

I was originally going to go the Planet Rock route but the video to Looking for the Perfect Beat is way more entertaining to me so here you go...

Please peep the solo dance break at 1:17...

I know the 80's fashion is coming back but I'm really hoping dudes don't try to bring this back!

The too tight to fight jeans are one thing but if they start sewing fringe down the sides I'm moving to a dessert island!

Blank Stare...

This is what happens when you take your prenatal vitamins with Henny!

OK, my questions are as follows:

Can somebody please make her a sandwich, heavy on the mayo?

Did she even view this video before she posted it?

How drunk do you have to be to enjoy this?

Was it me or did he look a tad touched?

Why the baggy draws?

What is That...Velvet?

Frankie (hot) stepped out to Monica's album
release party looking like the Velveteen Crackhead...

I don't know what year she got locked up in but I'll assume
it was the 90's cause ole girl is STUCK!

Secuuurity!!!!

I bet they hold his check this month!

I just love how the female security officer came over touched one of them on their shoulder and then backed up...

I mean I feel her cause I wouldn't get between those two for $6.75 an hour either.

And don't you love the twirl and drop at the end...Now that's a finale!

V.V. Va Voom

OK, so there is this great British artist out right now named VV Brown and I am so thankful for iPods. If it wasn't for them I would have already popped the tape or scratched the CD with all the rotation it's getting over here. I haven't been able to play an album from beginning to end in ages and it feels soooooo good. I'm in Musical Heaven

VV is super fashion forward and has her hands in quite a few things.

Besides being on her US tour right now she has launched an online vintage clothing store called VV Vintage.

Her album Traveling Like the Light, was released in the US on February 9th of this year, but the Brits had have the pleasure of her tunes since July of 2009. No fair!

So here are my top 2 picks from the album (you have no idea how hard that was).

Game Over

I think the video put this song over the top for me...

Back In Time

And here she is at home singing and playing one of her many mini keyboards (she collects them).
She sounds amazing...

Hop Along Cassidy...

Ok so I have a funny story for you...

A few years back a friend of mine from Cali came to visit. I cannot remember if this happened before or after he came back from a tour in Iraq but that wont take away from the story...

Anyway, my boy (we'll call him Otis) and I were hanging out in my bedroom drinking, watching TV and chatting it up. At some point he went downstairs to chat with my Mom and see how she was doing.

Now let me preface all this story by making it clear that I NEVER dated this dude EVER...not a hug, not a kiss, NADA.

Anyway, after being downstairs for a while he came back up and by this time I was on the sofa with my back turned away from the door and he was standing near the foot of my bed. After a short while he asked me if he can show me something.

I was taken a little by surprise but I didn't think much of if, 'maybe it's something he brought from the Iraq', I thought to myself. So I respond "sure" and continue watching TV.

After about 10 minutes I felt a little vibration and turned towards my door.

BAM...I'm greeted by a 6' 2" naked man hopping across the room towards me. His hands and feet are bound together with electrical tape and he has taped his mouth shut.

Now of course I am in total shock. I throw my hand up over my eyes and say "Oh my goodness, what are you doing? My Mom is downstairs" (which in hindsight was not the wrong thing to say).

Anyway, he proceeded to hop a little closer (remember he is naked so his peen is just a bouncing) and I am still cowering into the cushions of my sofa.

He mumbles something behind his taped mouth and turned around and proceeded to hop back out of my bedroom.

When he came back, at first he tried to act as if nothing really happened. I guess he thought 'oh well, she's not interested so we can just finish watching the Golden Girls'...Um Hell to the naw buddy boy.

I had to ask..."what the hell was that about?" He said something to effect of he saw it as him letting me know that he was mine if I'd have him.

I'm not sure how the convo ended (besides me making it clear that I was not interested) but he left shortly after all that popped off.

Why you ask did this story pop into my head today?
Because I got a call from 'Otis' today, he just got back from his 2nd or 3rd tour tour in Iraq and decided to give me a ring...

Larry's Steaks Commercial...

I bet you his cheese steaks are banging but with all the sexual innuendos he's got popping here I wouldn't trust him in the kitchen alone with my food...I'm sure his secret sauce contains DNA.

Diggy Does it Like This???

Yesterday while shopping with my girl SoyJoy we saw his older brother JoJo.
He gave me one of those, "Guuuurl, you don't know who I am?" looks.
As we kept it moving I mentioned that dude was giving me a weird a$$ look
and didn't even realize who he was till we were about a block away.

Lady Gaga's Telephone, featuring Beyonce

Tre, Kill Bill meets Natural Born Killers...

ENJOY!

Love the video...the song...eh, does nothing for me!

I know the still shots from this shoot are FIRE!

I'll be watching this frame by frame, over and over...

Music for Prudence....

Everybody (even people like me who hate award shows and just wait for their friends to call and say "hurry, hurry turn to the awards") heard about or saw a video of that crazy looking red headed woman (I'm not even going to give her shine and mention her name), who did a Kanye on Roger Ross Williams, the director of "Music by Prudence".

In the rare chance that you missed it here is a recap...

Anyway, the most important thing seems to have been shoved to the back ground and that is the film that won the award. Here is Roger Ross Williams speaking on his film "Music by Prudence"...

And I know there were camera rolling and all that, but I would have had to give her shove!

Post Perp Walk...

Grammy award winning singer, D'Angelo, government name Michael Archer, was arrested last night for allegedly negotiating a $40 blow job from an under cover cop in the West Village last night.

I'm just glad it was a woman!

I'm saying, he couldn't give Angie Stone a shout and see what was up?

Peep him over at theybf looking high as a kite after his release this morning...

Today a rep for D'Angelo, Lindsay Guion, released this statement...

"We know there is a lot of speculation in regard to the arrest of D'Angelo in New York City this past weekend. We would like his fans and the public at large to know that D'Angelo has pled not guilty — and is contesting the allegations made against him. Also know that he is in good health and extremely excited about his forthcoming new album.

"D'Angelo would like to personally thank all of his fans for the outpouring of concern, and appreciates if all would allow the American justice system to resolve the matter before jumping to any conclusions."

Oscar Question???

Does anyone else wonder if black people will ever get an Oscar for playing a POSITIVE role in a movie?

I'm happy for Mo and all that but seriously, if we ain't beating an ass, f*cking for cash, or stealing a stash we can't get any shine...

I'm saying...

Baby Gaga

I wonder if her Mom would be OK with this if she could understand what she was saying.

I must say that at least at our Kiddie Pageants we would never have a grown straight man on the panel. Only FLAMING queens and washed up beauty queens for our girls...the pervs have to watch in the privacy of their own homes.

Foolish Friday...

A man allegedly tried to slab his Momma over a remote control...

I really hope he was high!

Change Gon Come...to Brooklyn...

While on my way home from the post office yesterday I saw this.

We're almost there when it come to these prices...

On the bottom it references an exhibit being held at
MoCADA
(The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts),
in Brooklyn called:

The Gentrification of Brooklyn:
The Pink Elephant Speaks

I went to the opening reception for this exhibit back in February.

You can check out some flicks from the exhibit by clicking here,
but trust seeming them for yourself wouldn't be a bad idea
and MoCADA has a great gift store.

I went with my girl Laalita, who is a true wealth of info on all things.
You can check out her blog for inexpensive and fun things to
do the next time you're out in LaLa Land.

www.laalaland.com/

MoCADA is located at 80 Hansen Place
(@ the corner of S. Oxford St.)
in Brooklyn, NY 11217.

Lately, while rolling around my neighborhood I've seen these
random .

I'm not sure if this is related to the exhibit as well,
but it definitely make you say, " Hmmm"
It was about a block from the one above.

From the pesticides maybe???

Tre Sportacious!

This Saturday, March 6th @ 8pm, HBO will be doing an special called,
Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals.

According to HBO Sports president, Ross Greenburg, the show "...will tell their full life stories and provide an in-depth portrait of their complicated and historic bond."

Now I'm not a huge sports fan like that but these are dudes, I grew up watching. My favorite aunt was a huge basketball fan and she would always call me when they were on and make me watch.

Oh Snap...Who Remembers This One?

I'm Really Glad They Made the Children's Aid Society!

Don't ask me why this came to mind today,
but I've been singing it for about 3 hours now...

Guru Update....

In typical web fashion many blogs reported that Guru (a.k.a. Keith Elam) had passed away but the real deal is he underwent a successful surgery yesterday and is expected to make a full recovery...

You Know His Steez....

And speaking of the world revolving on it's axis (yeah he says that in the song), the recent earthquake in Chile reportedly knocked the earth of it's axis by 3 inches and could result in a 1.26 millisecond shorter day... Source

Disco Fever...Nails...

Lately I have been in a serious PARTY mood.

So I decided to throw a party on my nails...
Ever time I look down I smirk a bit and think of Disco Fever
...

I opted to do the opposite on the other hand,
so rhinestones on the pointer and black peacock inspired design on the ring finger.

Tools:
Toothpicks & everything you you see below.

The rhinestone wheel I found on eBay for about 3 bucks with shipping.
There are a total of 1,200, 100 in 12 different shapes.
That's like 100% times cheaper than what you'll find in your local beauty supply store in NY.
I saw 10 for $1.99.

Tips:

*If you don't want to use nail or crazy glue ( I don't) to adhere the rhinestones to you nails , just dab a little clear polish onto the completely dry nail with a toothpick and then press rhinestone into place and finish with a top coat.

*If you don't have bottle of the thin brushed silver polish for designs you can just place a dime sized dab of your silver polish onto a sheet of paper and make the dots and swipes with the tip of a clean toothpick.

Have fun and be creative ladies...
Don't let these Teeny Boppers & Whipper Snappers
try to bring the 80's and 90's
back without showing them what's really good!

Skittle-fest....

About 2 summers ago, my girls and I went to a BBQ. We jokingly named it the Skittle-Fest because so many of the dudes looked suspect and they had on every color in the rainbow (together).

I thought I had lost these pictures when my lap top crashed but I found some of my back up files...Whoo hoo!

Anyway, one of the only dudes who didn't look like he got his outfit from the Crayola Outlet had on all white and walked around the whole day with his dog tucked under his arm like a Chanel clutch.

You tell me is this TANGY?

Way Back Wednesday...Ooochie Coochie La La La....

I now totally understand why my mother stayed confiscating my tapes when I was a kid.

This and R. Kelly's 12 Play got snatched as soon as I got them...

Get Well Guru

Guru of Gangstarr went into cardiac arrest yesterday and is in a coma.

Say a prayer for a brother that brought us many hits in the 90's.

I will never forget seeing Guru on 6th avenue 7 Waverly outside of the Pizzeria Uno in the village when I was at lunch in High School (around '94 or '95). He was nice to me but kind of rude to a dark skin girl friend.
I won't make any speculations on that.

Just get well soon Guru!
